The new law creates an additional pathway to educator certification for military service members. It specifies that a military service member may receive a temporary educator certificate if he or she has:

1.    Minimum of 48 months of active-duty military service with an honorable discharge or a medical separation on a DD214

2.    Minimum of 60 college credits with a minimum grade point average of  2.5 on an official transcript

3.    Passing score on a Florida subject-area examination for bachelor’s level subjects which demonstrates mastery of subject area knowledge.

4.    Employment in a Florida school district, including charter schools, with an assigned mentor

5.    Cleared background screening

The law further provides that a temporary certificate for military service members who meet the established requirements will be valid for a period of five (5) years, however this is a nonrenewable 5 year certificate.

Before applying for this pathway, complete a waiver request for the Military Certification Fees Waiver (MCFW).

  • Military spouses and families are not eligible for this certification pathway.

For districts: the main task will be assigning an appropriate mentor. 

The mentor must be certified, have at least three (3) years of PreK-12 teaching experience, and have received an effective or highly effective evaluation the previous year.
 
To assist in the transition, anyone issued a temporary teaching certification under this new law must be assigned a teacher mentor for at least their first two (2) years of employment.
